The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…
Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Upcoming ‘30 Rock’ and ‘Earl’ Guest Stars
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, My Name Is Earl,
Let the fall season begin. Please? I mean, how much longer do we need to wait before our favorite shows are back in full force? Turns out, just a little bit longer. Come on, we can make it! To hold you over… a little casting news. First up, The Sopranos’ star, Edie Falco, who will be joining 30 Rock for a guest stint. What’s that you say? Yes, I haven’t talked about how much I love 30 Rock in awhile. Please, tune in if you’ve never seen it because it is fantastic. Jerry Seinfeld will be appearing in the second season premiere, so I’m sure there will be plenty of laughs. As for Falco, no details on what role she’ll play, but according to Tina Fey, “We’re thrilled to have such an amazing actress come join us. Also, a lot of guys on our crew want The Sopranos ending explained to them.” And, have you seen Fey in the new American Express ad? She is beyond adorable.
On to My Name is Earl, which boasts the addition of Who’s the Boss and Charmed star Alyssa Milano this season for at least eight episodes. She may be a love interest for Earl. While I’ve never been a Milano fan, I do have a fond recollection of her in one of those Amy Fisher movies in the early nineties (you know, “The Long Island Lolita”?). At any rate, you can catch both of these funny shows when they return on September 27th (Earl) and October 4th (30 Rock). We’re in the home stretch, folks.

Gordon Ramsay Roasts His Nuts
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Reality, NBC, My Name Is Earl,
I’m not a crass person by any means. A dirty joke makes me blush and look the other way…but this news about Gordon Ramsay burning his, well… “privates” seemed like an interesting news topic to cover. Ramsay is of course the rude dude in charge of Hell’s Kitchen—his mean demeanor no doubt adding to the entertainment factor of this reality cooking show. According to Ramsay, “The other day I was standing too close to the [stove] when I was cooking. I was wearing these cotton trousers and underneath I was going commando.” (OK, that enough is too much information). “Suddenly, I felt this searing heat. I went, ‘F**k me, bol***ks to that,’ and for once I was spot on. My balls were burning.” Now, that’s no laughing matter, to be sure. Just last night I burned my fingers removing the lid off the steamer—and it hurt like crazy. The thing about Ramsay’s story is that I immediately thought about the repeat of My Name is Earl that was on last week… the one with Norm MacDonald called “Two Balls, Two Strikes,” where Randy and Earl describe MacDonald’s character’s (Little Chubby) injury using colors like “blorange.” Anyway, the parallel between Ramsay’s injury and My Name is Earl got me thinking about karma and wondering if Chef Ramsay was just getting a little payback for all of the contestants he’s ripped on. Just my deep thought for the day.

‘Earl’ and ‘The Office’ Reruns Coming to TBS
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Syndication, King of Queens, My Name Is Earl, The Office, Cable/Satellite,
Wow, did you catch last night’s marathon of The Office? I caught the last half of “Casino Night” and it really brought back all of those old Pam and Jim feelings. When Jim puts it out there that he loves Pam… then later kisses her. Sigh. Add to that the slightly teary-eyed Jim when she rejected him—wow, that’s a great episode. And now, The Office will live on in reruns on TBS. Ditto for My Name is Earl, another solid NBC comedy… both Earl and The Office are part of what made NBC “must see,” at least in my sad little existence. Anyway, TBS will begin airing the pair in the fall, for the low-low cost of $600,000-$700,000 per episode. No details on what timeslots these will hold—and with Friends, Sex and the City, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond and Family Guy, there will be plenty of funny on TBS (except for Raymond, which I have never found too funny).

25 Episodes Each for The Office, Earl
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office, Ratings, Renewals,
If you find yourself wanting more of The Office and My Name is Earl, next season is for you. Both series have received a 25 episode (each) order, a bump up from the typical 22. Plus, five episodes of The Office will be hour long installments. I’ve really been enjoying those supersized episodes, so it’ll be nice to have a handful of full hour shows in the fall. Thursdays next season will remain intact—so expect My Name is Earl, 30 Rock, The Office and Scrubs to continue their comedy block. Thank heavens. Thursdays are my night for TV, if ever I had to proclaim one. I even instruct my kids that Thursday night bedtimes need to go smoothly because I have major TV viewing. And, now I can breathe a sigh that Scrubs will, in fact, be returning again (albeit for just 18 episodes, but I’ll take it!). For at least another year, Thursdays will be the funniest night on television.

Jaime Pressly Has a Boy
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, My Name Is Earl, Gossip,
Awww, Jaime Pressly gave birth this morning to a baby boy. Great news for her and fiancee, deejay Eric Cubiche. Bad news for fans hoping to chat with her last night during the live blog after My Name is Earl. She was scheduled to sit in and answer questions, but I guess other things were more pressing. Eww. That sounded kind of gross. Anyway, they named the baby Dezi James, in part for her fiancee’s Desi Arnaz impression; James is her father’s name. Pressly’s pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline of Earl this season and the season finale aired last night. She was nominated for an Emmy for her role as Joy, currently married to “crabman” Darnell (Eddie Steeples) and the ex-wife of title character Earl (Jason Lee). She can be seen in the upcoming film D.O.A., coming to theaters on June 22nd.

Smellovision Comes to My Name is Earl
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, NBC, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, The Office,
Here’s one of those clever little marketing campaigns that I can’t wait to see—during May sweeps, My Name is Earl will debut a feature called Laugh ‘n’ Sniff for the May 3rd episode. How do you take part in this revolutionary TV viewing experience? Look no further than your nearest issue of TV Guide during that week for a special scratch-and-sniff card. No word yet on what kind of scents viewers can anticipate sniffling in during the supersized episode, but Earl will be taking his first job at an appliance store. Also on tap for May sweeps at NBC are plenty of supersized Thursday night shows. Man, I love those extra long shows. Be on the lookout for Earl, The Office, and Scrubs extended episodes, as well as one-hour season finales of The Office and Scrubs on May 17th. May can’t come soon enough for me.
